My nephew sent me a picture of his son, Dominic. He was shooting a little .22 rifle. I flashed back to all the times with my brother, of me shooting a .22, of seeing my nephew in his son, passing along the same hobby, sharing that pleasure, honing that skill. Mike loved to hunt and fish, and he shared this with us. Just as Pop shared it with him.
I wondered what joys have I shared with my children that will be shared with the next generation?
Gardening. Mother shared this with me. I wasn't interested at the time, but I have grown (no pun intended :) to enjoy it.
Baking cookies. Once a year, at Christmas, we would bake Nanny's Butter Cookies. It makes a huge batch and it is a pain in the fanny. Rolling out the dough, in what seemed to be an endless process of rolling, cutting, decorating. So, once a year at Christmas, we bake Nanny's cookies. Shamefully, I've missed a year here and there. We will not miss this year.
Photography. We always have to stop and pose. They have stopped resisting this, assume the formation, and get it over with quickly. And I love lots of other photos. Jan has always said that because of Mother's love of photographs, that she found her life's work.
So, what are we sharing with our family? Our friends? What pleasures are we doing together that we will flashback to?
Little things that really are the big things.
